Anna mentors England Squash coaching initiative

Northern Head Coach Anna Vaughan Hawkins has been appointed as a mentor for a new England Squash campaign to encourage more women into coaching

Squash Girls Can Coach is a 12-month, funded, structured programme of training, workshops and mentoring, designed to take candidates through their Level 1 and Level 2 coaching qualifications.

Anna herself was appointed to the Northern’s coaching team as Development Coach in 2016, together with Head Professional Julianne Courtice and Performance Coach Annette Pilling. At the time there was minimal junior coaching, no adult coaching and no schools programme.

Today, the Northern boasts a benchmark Junior Programme, Adult Beginners, Intermediate and Women’s/ Family sessions, and works actively with 13 local schools.

Anna, who plays for the Ladies’ 1st team, Men’s 5th team and the Welsh Masters Team, said: “I love it. Deciding to become a professional coach was the best decision I ever made.

“For the Club to appoint an all-woman coaching team raised questions at the time but I believe it has worked – for the guys as well! We have seen more men joining the club as well as women and juniors.”

The Courtcare Northern Open 2019: A Review Of The Action

In a repeat of last year’s final, top seed Julianne Courtice successfully defended her Northern Open title against 5th seed Rachael Chadwick in front of a packed crowd of supporters.
Julianne, The Northern’s Head Professional, took the match 11-9, 11-9, 11-5 but the 3-0 scoreline belied a hard-fought match. Rachael had enjoyed a successful tournament, beating 4th seed Melissa Alves on her way to the final, and put Julianne under pressure from the start. But Jules played a solid and constructive game to win through and take her third PSA title.
And..

The Ian Stewart Cup 2019 produced a major rankings upset with Mike Harris (PSA ranking 240) taking the trophy with a 3-1 win over Miles Jenkins (179)

Running alongside the Courtcare Northern Open women’s tournament, the men’s PSA Satellite event was launched this year in honour of former Club President Ian Stewart, who sadly died last November.
The trophy itself was donated by the family and presented by Ian’s wife Norma – who had accurately predicted Mike’s eventual success after watching his semi-final victory over Harry Falconer!
Plus..

World no 7 Laura Massaro held a clinic on motivation in sport at the Northern, ahead of the finals of the Courtcare Northern Open and Ian Stewart Cup on 31st March.

She described her own route to success, and discussed the psychology of sport and the concepts of ‘coachability’ and personal branding with an audience of around 30 women and girls from the Northern and surrounding clubs.
After the presentation, Laura signed autographs before helping Head Coach Anna Vaughan with an hour-long coaching session, sharing her warm-up routine and having a hit with the players.

Junior coaching at the northern

New and refreshed Junior and Adult Coaching Programmes

At The Northern we like to always offer the best coaching we can. That’s why we have spent time to listen to what our members want and devised a new, fresh approach to both Adult and Junior coaching.

The Adult coaching programme takes place in small groups, allowing for quick progression. People are placed in groups based on their experience, so you’ll be playing and learning with players at your level.

The Junior Tennis programme has been totally revamped to show a clear pathway so the player, and their parents, can see how they are progressing at each stage as they get older and more experience. Plus, they now take place three times across the week, giving juniors and their parents added flexibility to attend making sure they never miss a match.
